Myopia Management Problems - That’s Ours To Own!!
Is there a big box problem with myopia lenses?
Studies are awesome tools for both parents and ECPs; however, they have caveats. As an example, MiSight studies claim up to 60% retardation in myopia progression as compared to single vision contacts. When it comes down to AL it’s closer to 50%, which is still awesome. In these studies about thirty to forty percent of the study participants wearing MiSight show almost no change over several years! Spectacles for myopia control like Stellest have similar results, only that the numbers fluctuate in both refractive and AL changes. However, what about the other 60% which is highlighted in the clip above? Those patients that don’t have those stable outcomes? Those patients with poor compliance due to many different factors, especially with spectacle wear?
Myopia Management requires time! Time which is a precious resource in our practices today. Time to educate. Time to perform a thorough assessment of the visual system. Time for follow-up care to measure efficacy for that particular adolescent. Office time!
Most of our practices are not wired this way when it comes to general care. Yes, our medical care model is, but what about the myopia management service? If it’s still part of general eyecare it’s going to either strain the rest of the practice or be the unwelcome participant when our young patients who are progressing fall through the cracks.
You can’t make this up. You either must commit to the fact that MM requires more follow-up than that SCL fit or stop the charades. There are no acceptable alternatives, and unlike the rest of your VCP practice you’re going to have to be the doctor here by taking back this part of your practice.
